Many people believe that the origin of Father’s Day is not a latest phenomenon, as many believe it to be. The original tradition of Father’s Day can be traced in the ruins of Babylon. They have recorded that a young boy called Elmesu carved a Father’s Day message on a card made out of clay nearly 4,000 years ago. Elmesu wished his Babylonian father good health and a long life. When you want to order flowers or a gift, for a loved one, whether it is a birthday, anniversary, wedding or just to say thank you, we have a tremendous choice of where we go to order. If we are looking for let’s say, an online florist, it is easy enough to find something quickly. Unfortunately, as the bigger “corporate companies” are taking over the marketing, even on line it takes a little more effort to find the smaller companies.

As consumers, we usually want to purchase something quickly, easily and from a convenient source. If we take the time to choose a smaller company, we will often find excellent customer service. Most websites are easy to navigate through, however, if you do wish to speak to a person with some knowledge of the products, it usually only happens anymore with smaller companies.

Most large companies have an answering service that will take your order and yes, they could be in India for all you know. That person may know the arrangement you’re interested in from a picture they see on their computer, but they probably will have never seen the flowers they’re selling and they cannot offer ideas based on budget, preference, or seasonality because they are working from a script! Growing Orchids Made Easy

The ancient mysteries and romantic passion about orchids make them irresistible. We know that there are around 25,000 species of orchids all over the world and over 100,000 hybrids grown by horticulturist. Several thousand species are still found in the wild, however, since the 1600 these numbers have diminished from over exploitation. Since they are so popular as a cut flower and as live plants, cultivation has grown immensely over the years. They are the royalty of the tropical flower world.

Orchids have the largest variety of flowers in the floral kingdom. Once you have started growing orchids and get good results, it is rather addicting. It is mostly because of the long lasting beauty each spike presents, with each blossom that opens.

Once you receive a plant, or purchase one, note if it is in bloom. If it is notate on your calendar of its blooming cycle. It will give you an idea when to expect the plant to bloom. It is true, however , if your plants are very happy with their conditions, they may bloom several times a year.

Phalaenopsis are one of the most prolific of the orchid plant species.

Caring for your orchid:

Find a special windowsill, or shelf made just for the plant.

They love space and light, however, not so much that it will burn the leaves.

South facing sun is perfect.

Temperature: Depending on your home, if it is generally a warm place, no major cold drafts, but check with your plant variety, as some plants are very hardy and do not mind the cold.

Humidity: The kitchen is a perfect place, as there is often steam from cooking, or close to a laundry room. It is often appreciated if you put them in the bathroom to get a bit of a steam bath while showering.

Watering: It is very important that you do not over water your orchid. It you can note, in the winter, you will water less often and in the summer a bit more. If you have phalaenopsis plants, they prefer to be watered with rainwater, or filtered water. Wipe leaves with luke warm water and make sure there is no water sitting in the middle of the plant leaves. If you have a moon calendar, water your plants on the water sign days.

Drainage: Do not allow your plant to sit in a damp container. Water the plants thoroughly and allow to fully drain before returning to holding pot.

You can also mist your orchid plants, especially if the roots have a bulb. It will prevent the bulb from shriveling.

Feeding: Orchids do not require too much feeding. They like to be fed during their growing time. The roots may appear a bit purple and green. Using orchid food is best. Follow directions on the container.

Spring Brings Hawaiian Flowers Into Full Bloom

Traveling over 3000 miles, out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, we find the most exquisite flora and fauna. Hawaii has the largest environmental diversity in a small amount of land than anywhere else in the world. Tropical flower species have found this safe haven to proliferate, as the conditions are the perfect combination for healthy growth and sustainable survival.

The state of Hawaii is a volcanic archipelago of 137 islands in the entire chain. Several of these are known as atolls and we know that there are eight main islands. Hawaii (the Big Island), Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kaho’olawe, Oahu, Kauai, and Ni’ihau.

Each island has completely different environments with unique plants and birdlife. Of course, you see some cross over, however, many plants thrive in specific conditions only found on each island.

For example, orchid plants and anthurium flowers grow best on the island of Hawaii. The porous nature of volcanic rock, the intense heat on the south side of the island and the humidity are perfect for these ancient beauties.

As we travel up to an elevation of 4000 feet on the crater of Haleakala, Maui, we will find farms filled with protea flowers. One of the hardiest flowers, they seem to love the harsh conditions. Their flowers bloom throughout the seasons of autumn, winter and spring with showy exotic colors and shapes.

We must venture far into the rainforests of the island chain of Maui, Hawaii and Kauai to experience the stunning exhibition of the tropical Hawaiian flowers. Several varieties of heliconia, bird of paradise, psittacorum (parrot), several varieties of ginger; pink, red, torch, Indonesian, shell, white and yellow are some of the exotics in this family. These exotics store the water in their stems, which make them long lasting in any arrangement.

The extraordinary display of tropical foliage is also found in the forests. You will see common “house plants” such as dieffenbacia, or monstera deliciosa, growing wild on the trees. Of course they will be ten times the size, but to see them in the rainforests, we can certainly appreciate how healthy it is for them to live free with the perfect conditions.

The flowers in Hawaii all have seasons, subtle as they may be, they can feel the changes in rainfall, sunlight and temperature. Different varieties of each flower will come into season during different months, which makes Hawaiian tropical flowers unique and very popular. They are also long lasting and certainly the most beautiful flowers in the world.

Spring has arrived to the islands as an abundance of Exotic tropicals give birth to an array of colors, shapes and sizes. If you visit the islands and happen to drive either to the rainforest side, or upcountry, you will see these exquisite flowers lining the roadsides and growing in the fields. The most magnificent of these beauties, are the Heliconia flowers.

They are part of the Musaceae family, with a genes of 100 to 200 species. The most common varieties you may know are called “Lobster Claw” or “Parrots”. Originally these magnificent flowers come from South America and the Pacific Islands west of Indonesia. They are a fairly new industry in Hawaii and were introduced in the 80’s. They rapidly took root and have proliferated ever since. New varieties come up every year. The most popular for arrangements are the upright variety. although my absolute favorite are the pendulum or hanging heliconia.
