The Maile is a sacred vine, found only in the rainforest. It is traditionally worn by men in ceremonies and celebrations. The lei are made by stripping the leaves and strands from the woody stem, and then tying them into a single, "open" ended lei. Maile holds a sacred place in the Hawaiian culture, as an offering to Laka, the goddess of the Hawaiian hula.
